Castledex supplied and installed the Specimen Collection Storage System for the new CSIRO National Collections facility in Canberra. The project seeks to preserve CSIRO’s insect, wildlife and plant collections in a purpose-built, highly resilient facility, to enhance research access and use.

Delivering fit-for-purpose facilities for CSIRO’s biological collections will enhance digitisation and genomic studies, as well as traditional studies of Australia’s biodiversity, to address some of our greatest challenges, by providing:

  • resilient and valuable environments through new insights into Australia’s unique biodiversity;
  • a secure Australia and region through improved identification of biosecurity

Through this Project, the Project will deliver:
• a 7,100 sqm greenfield facility, adjacent to the existing Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research, inclusive of:
o New specimen treatment facilities;
o Independent storage vaults for the insect, mammal, bird, nest, egg and bone collections;
o Clean curation workspaces;
o Research laboratories for examination and research of specimens;
o Digitisation facilities;
o Workspace environment, meeting zones and collaboration hubs; and
o Internal and external rooftop plantroom.
• A new interconnecting link-bridge walkway between the new National Collections Building and the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research; and
• External works, including associated service connections, a new access road and landscaping.

The new National Collections Building is jointly funded by CSIRO and the Department of Education through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
